Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded (or a mix of provolone and mozzarella)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns (or sandwich rolls)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for sautéing)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Beef

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks, about 5–7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the vegetables soften.

Step 3: Add the Sauce

Stir in the beef broth, milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and mustard. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5–7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.

Step 4: Add the Cheese

Once the mixture has thickened, lower the heat and stir in the shredded cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese has melted and the mixture is creamy.

Step 5: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

Toast the hamburger buns or sandwich rolls if you prefer a bit of crunch. Spoon the Philly cheesesteak mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, then top with the other half.

Notes

Cheese Options – If you can’t find provolone, you can substitute it with mozzarella or even cheddar for a different flavor.
Adjust the Sauce – Feel free to adjust the amount of Worcestershire sauce or mustard for more tang or flavor depth.
Add Veggies – Mushrooms, roasted red peppers, or even spinach would make great additions to this recipe.
