For the Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef (or beef chunks)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (if needed for browning)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups mushrooms, sliced (white button or cremini)
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk (optional, for a creamy finish)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon gold or russet), peeled and chopped
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup milk or cream
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter and milk, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Keep warm.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. If using beef chunks, sear them on all sides. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside. Add a bit of olive oil if needed for browning.
Step 3: Sauté the Vegetables
- In the same skillet, add the onion and garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened.
- Add the mushrooms and cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are browned and tender.
Step 4: Make the Gravy
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to coat everything evenly.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
- Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the cooked beef and let it simmer for another 3-5 minutes. Add heavy cream or milk if you want a creamier gravy.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Step 5: Assemble and Serve
- To serve, spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto a plate and top with the mushroom and beef gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
Notes
- Choose the Right Mushrooms: Cremini mushrooms add a deeper flavor, but button mushrooms work well too.
- Thicken as Needed: If the gravy is too thin, mix 1 tablespoon of flour with a bit of water and stir it in.
- Customize the Potatoes: Add roasted garlic or cheese to the mashed potatoes for extra flavor.
