For the Burger Patties:
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juicy patties)
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp onion powder
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
For the Toppings:
-
4 slices sharp cheddar or Irish cheddar
-
1 small onion, thinly sliced
-
1 tbsp butter or oil (for sautéing)
-
1 cup shredded lettuce
-
4 slices tomato
-
4 brioche or potato buns, toasted
For the Pub Sauce:
-
¼ cup mayonnaise
-
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
-
1 tsp horseradish (optional)
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Pinch of salt and pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Pub Sauce
-
In a small bowl, mix together mayo, Dijon, horseradish (if using), Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
-
Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
Step 2: Prepare the Burger Patties
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon.
-
Gently mix and form into 4 equal patties, slightly larger than your buns (they shrink while cooking).
-
Press a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing.
Step 3: Sauté the Onions
-
Heat butter or oil in a small pan over medium heat.
-
Add onions and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring often, until golden and caramelized.
-
Set aside.
Step 4: Cook the Burgers
-
Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Cook patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.
-
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar on each patty and cover the pan to melt.
Step 5: Toast the Buns
-
Toast buns cut-side down on a hot skillet or grill for 1–2 minutes until golden and crisp.
Step 6: Assemble the Burgers
-
Spread pub sauce on both sides of the toasted buns.
-
Add a layer of shredded lettuce and tomato to the bottom bun.
-
Place the cheesy burger patty on top.
-
Pile on the caramelized onions.
-
Add the top bun and press down gently. Serve immediately.
Notes
Don’t Overwork the Meat – Mix just until combined to keep the patties tender.
Use Quality Beef – 80/20 ground beef gives the best flavor and juiciness.
Melt the Cheese – Cover the pan after adding cheese for perfect melt.
Toast the Buns – It adds flavor and keeps the buns from getting soggy.
