Ingredients
Scale
For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for extra richness)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk (or more, as needed)
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the cubed potatoes and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth, adjusting the milk to achieve your desired consistency. Cover and set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked.
- Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
Step 3: Make the Gravy
- In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion and garlic until softened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic mixture, stirring to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Let the gravy simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the cooked ground beef back into the skillet, stirring to coat in the gravy.
Step 4: Assemble and Serve
- Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto a plate.
- Top with the ground beef and gravy mixture.
- Garnish with chopped parsley or chives, if desired.
Notes
- Use Starchy Potatoes: Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes are ideal for creamy mashed potatoes.
- Deglaze the Skillet: Scrape up browned bits from the skillet when adding the broth for extra flavor.
- Customize: Add mushrooms, peas, or carrots to the gravy for added texture and nutrition.
