- Cornstarch (¼ cup) – Makes the batter extra light and crunchy.
- Baking Powder (1 tsp) – Adds airiness to the batter.
- Salt (1 tsp) – Enhances the flavor.
- Paprika (1 tsp) – Gives a hint of smokiness.
- Garlic Powder (½ tsp, optional) – Adds extra depth.
- Egg (1 large) – Helps bind the batter.

- Cold Water (¼ cup, as needed) – Helps thin the batter for the perfect consistency.
- Breadcrumbs (1 cup, optional for extra crunch) – Adds another layer of crispiness.
- Vegetable Oil (for frying) – Neutral oil like canola or sunflower works best.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Peel the onions and slice them into ½-inch thick rings.
- Separate the rings and set them aside.
Step 2: Make the Batter
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and garlic powder.
- In another bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and cold water.
- Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, whisking until smooth. The batter should be slightly thick but not too heavy.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
- Heat 2–3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
Step 4: Coat the Onion Rings
- Dip each onion ring into the batter, letting the excess drip off.
- (Optional) For extra crunch, coat the rings in breadcrumbs after dipping in batter.
Step 5: Fry Until Golden
- Carefully place the rings into the hot oil, frying in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!
- Serve hot with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce!
Notes
- Use Cold Ingredients: A cold batter helps create a crispier coating.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Oil: Fry in batches for even cooking.
