Ingredients

  • Large Onions (2, preferably sweet or yellow onions) – The star of the dish!
  • All-Purpose Flour (1 cup) – Helps create a crispy coating.
  • Cornstarch (¼ cup) – Makes the batter extra light and crunchy.
  • Baking Powder (1 tsp) – Adds airiness to the batter.
  • Salt (1 tsp) – Enhances the flavor.
  • Paprika (1 tsp) – Gives a hint of smokiness.
  • Garlic Powder (½ tsp, optional) – Adds extra depth.
  • Egg (1 large) – Helps bind the batter.
  • Milk (¾ cup) – Creates a smooth batter.
  • Cold Water (¼ cup, as needed) – Helps thin the batter for the perfect consistency.
  • Breadcrumbs (1 cup, optional for extra crunch) – Adds another layer of crispiness.
  • Vegetable Oil (for frying) – Neutral oil like canola or sunflower works best.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them into ½-inch thick rings.
  2. Separate the rings and set them aside.

Step 2: Make the Batter

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and garlic powder.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and cold water.
  3. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, whisking until smooth. The batter should be slightly thick but not too heavy.

Step 3: Heat the Oil

  1. Heat 2–3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).

Step 4: Coat the Onion Rings

  1. Dip each onion ring into the batter, letting the excess drip off.
  2. (Optional) For extra crunch, coat the rings in breadcrumbs after dipping in batter.

Step 5: Fry Until Golden

  1. Carefully place the rings into the hot oil, frying in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Serve hot with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • Use Cold Ingredients: A cold batter helps create a crispier coating.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Oil: Fry in batches for even cooking.
  • For Extra Crunch: Double-dip in batter and breadcrumbs before frying.
