Ingredients
- sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
- Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 4 squares (or more, depending on the size you want for each danish).
Place a spoonful of the cream cheese filling in the center of each square, spreading it out slightly, leaving space around the edges.
Carefully fold the corners of the puff pastry towards the center to form a little pocket or shape you like (like an envelope or triangle). Press down lightly to seal.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush the egg wash over the folded pastry to give it a golden, shiny finish when baked.
Place the filled pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and crispy.
Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. If desired, dust with a little powdered sugar for extra sweetness. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Fruit Filling: Add a spoonful of your favorite jam or fresh berries along with the cream cheese for a fruity twist.
- Flaky Pastry: Make sure not to overwork the puff pastry. The less you handle it, the flakier the result will be!
- Vegan Option: Swap the cream cheese for a plant-based alternative and use a plant-based egg wash (or skip the egg wash for a more natural finish).
