Ingredients
For the Bread:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 cups peeled and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pan and Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt. Set aside.
Step 3: Mix Wet Ingredients
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
4. Stir in the milk until well combined.
Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.
6. Fold in the diced apples.
Step 5: Layer and Add Topping
7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
8. In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon and sugar for the topping. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the batter in the pan.
9. Pour the remaining batter on top and sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon sugar topping.
Step 6: Bake the Bread
10. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil during the last 10-15 minutes.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
11. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy!
Notes
- Use Sweet-Tart Apples: Varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work great for flavor and texture.
- Don’t Overmix: Mix the batter just until combined to avoid a dense loaf.
- Make It Ahead: This bread tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld together.
